Employees should 'make sacrifices to avoid redundancies'

Employers should take steps to prevent redundancies among their colleagues by having employees make sacrifices, according to an employment expert.

This may mean taking unpaid holiday, not accepting bonuses, reducing hours or even switching to part-time or flexible working, a partner at employment practice Dale Langley & Co explained.

Michael Scutt said: "Employers need to take great care taking any such steps though, because they would amount to a breach of contract, allowing employees to bring employment tribunal claims."

Employers should do their best to ensure the staff members in question are willing to co-operate. Having their agreement would streamline the whole process.

Mr Scutt recommends that employers reassure any employee afflicted that the rationale is comprehensible and justified, while also making clear that it is a temporary measure.

If there is an incentive that can be offered to the employee, then this may sugar coat the decision.ADNFCR-16000670-ID-801313162-ADNFCR
